AGE GROUPS
- Expanding to 3 Age Groups
o 8th grade and younger (97U)
o 9th grade (96)
o 11th and 10th grade (94U)
HEAD AND ASSISTANT COACHES

- Selection
o The Phase 3 coaches are selected by the ODP Staff, that includes the returning Phase 2 coaches
o 11th grade will be the Phase 2 1992U coaches
o 9th grade will be the Phase 2 1994U coaches
o 8th grade will be the 2009 ODP Holiday Camp Coaches
- Retention
o One goal for Phase 3 is to have continuity and consistency from Phase 2
o Continuity and consistency are two important building blocks for long term success
o The goal is to maintain and find if need be the right people, doing the right things for the right reasons and then have a structure and environment in place for them to thrive
o It is possible for a Phase 2 coach not to be selected for Phase 3
o It is possible for a 2009 ODP Holiday Camp coach not to be selected for Phase 3
Timeline and Deadlines
o 8th grade Coaches will be named by February 28, 2010
o Phase 2 Coaches will notify their respective National Technical Director they would like to be considered for Phase 3 by February 28, 2010
ODP TRAINING HOURS

- 48 hours: 3 Options (Determined by Zone Coach)
o 4 training weekends x 8 hours
o 3 training weekends x 10+ hours
o Regional Championships x 16 hours

8th grade U and 9th grade TRYOUTS

- Logistics
o 8th grade U and 9th grade Tryouts are to be completed by Aug. 30.
o Tryout dates and location must be posted at least 30 days in advance of the tryout
o Tryout Hours = 12
o Tryout fee = $120

- Why increase the tryout hours
o To meet the demands of the zones with a large number of athletes that are attending the tryouts
o Will allow for more time and a fairer process to make the selection of the training team
o To meet the demands of the zones that are very large geographically
o More teaching and learning

- Satellite Tryouts
o Tryouts can be conducted within Satellite areas of each respective zone
o All Satellite tryouts must be approved by the ODP National Technical Directors

- ODP Zone Training Team Selection
o Each Zone and respective Satellite tryouts will select athletes for their respective ODP Zone Training Team with approval from the Regional Technical Director
o An ODP Training Team is announced by the Head Coach within a week of the conclusion of the tryouts after approval of the Regional Technical Director
o 8th grade U and 9th grade Training Team consists of a maximum of 36 athletes through the Zone Evaluation Camp and 28 athletes after the Zone Evaluation Camp
o An ODP Official Letter is sent to each athlete within a week after the approval of the roster by the Regional Technical and the announcement of the team by the Head Coach

- ODP Zone Training Team Tryout Plan
o Pacific, Central CA, Coastal CA and Southern Pacific will conduct 8th grade U and 9th grade Tryouts separately
o Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Mountain, Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Pacific Southwest can combine the 8th grade U and 9th grade Tryouts
o All 8th grade U girl tryouts will use the Mikasa Junior Ball
o A Tryout Plan will be provided to Zone Coaches by the National Technical Directors
o The Tryout Plan has to be followed by the Zone Coaches

- ODP Training
o ODP training starts September 2010; some ODP Zone Training Teams may start later than September 2010 due to the high school water polo season
o Please check USA Water Polo website and click the ODP icon for the latest ODP schedules and information

- 2010 ODP Holiday Camp and 8th grade U Tryouts
o At the 8th grade U Tryout, each Zone selects 7 7th grade athletes for the December 2010 ODP Holiday Camp
o Athlete selection must include at least one goalie
o If a 7th grade athlete is selected for the 8th grade and U Training Team that athlete would not be eligible to be selected for the Holiday Camp
- Current 1994U TRAINING TEAMS
- 1994u Phase 2 athletes
o Phase 2 1994u athletes are invited to return to their respective Phase 3 ODP Training Team (11th grade and younger)
o Invitation letters will be sent out no later than July 16, 2010

- 11th and 10th Grade Tryouts
o 11th and 10th grade ODP Tryouts are conducted in conjunction with the first 12 hours of ODP training
o Tryouts are open for those athletes who were not on the 1994u ODP Phase 2 Training Team
o Tryout fee will be ____
o ODP Phase 3 Training Teams will be selected at the conclusion of the first twelve hours of training
o If a tryout athlete is selected for the Training Team, the athlete’s ODP Training Fee will be _____
o At the conclusion of the first six hours of the tryout, an athlete may be asked not to return, if so that athlete will be reimbursed

- ODP Phase 3 11th Grade U Training Teams
o The 11th grade U ODP Phase 3 Training Team will be selected at the conclusion of the first twelve hours of training
o A returning Phase 2 athlete may not be selected for the Phase 3 Training Team, at the conclusion of the first twelve hours
o The 11th grade U Training Teams consists of a maximum of 36 athletes through the Zone Evaluation Camp and 28 athletes after the Zone Evaluation Camp
o An updated training team is announced within 2 days of the conclusion of Zone Evaluation Camp, after the approval of the Regional Technical Director

- Reimbursement
o If an athlete is not selected for the training team after twelve hours of training and has paid over ____, the athlete will be reimbursed the difference
o If an athlete is not selected for the final training team after the Zone Evaluation Camp and has paid over ____, the athlete will be reimbursed the difference

- Athletes born in 1998 (7th grade and younger)
o Athletes are selected at the 8th grade u Tryouts
o Each ODP Zone Training Team selects 7 born in 1998 athletes for the 2010 Holiday Camp
o One of the athletes selected must be a goalie
o Holiday Camp is held in December at the USOC National Training Center in Colorado Springs
o Girls Holiday Camp: December 9-13 (arrive the 9th and depart the 13th)
o Boy Holiday Camp: December 16-21 (arrive the 16th and depart the 21st)
o ODP National Technical Directors in collaboration with the Regional Technical Directors, ODP Zone Coordinators and USAWP Zone Chairs will select a girl’s and boy’s ODP Zone Holiday Camp Coaches
o Each ODP Training Zone will send one referee to each camp
ZONE EVALUATION CAMP

- Conducted at the halfway point of training
o Zone Evaluation Camp includes competition, training and testing
o Each athlete is evaluated at the halfway point of training
o Steps and progressions are included in the evaluation for the next evaluation at the Regional Championships
o Regional Technical Director supervises the Zone Evaluation Camp
o National Technical Director and/or National Teams Staff can be in attendance assisting in the supervision and evaluation of the Zone Evaluation Camp
- REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
- Each region will conduct a Regional Championships
o 2 day championships event format
o 11th grade U will conduct their Regional Championships at a single site
o 8th grade U and 9th grade will hold their Regional Championships at the same site
o Regional Championships can be conducted as early as April 9-10 and no later than May 14-15
o Each Zone Training Team will bring a maximum of 28 athletes; two teams of 14
o Each athlete and coach will receive an evaluation within 10 days of the conclusion of the Regional Championships
o Following the Regional Championships, in collaboration a National Teams Staff member, National Technical Director, Regional Technical Director and Zone Head and Assistant Coaches will select Zone athletes to represent their respective Region at the National Training and Selection Camp
o A total of 70 athletes will be selected for the National Training and Selection Camp
o East Region: 14 athletes selected
o West Region: 14 athletes selected
o Northern California Region: 14 athletes selected
o Southern California Region: 28 athletes selected
NATIONAL TRAINING AND SELECTION CAMP

- May 27-30, 2011
- 70 athletes selected from the each age group and gender Regional Championships
o Each age group and gender will conduct a National Training and Selection Camp (NTSC)
o The NTSC’s are conducted by their respective National Teams Staff
o The NTSC’s feature Regional teams playing a round robin ODP National Championship; technical and tactical training, physical testing, classroom sessions and competition that will combine the regional athletes
o ODP Head Coaches attend the NTSC
o Following the 1994u NTSC’s the Youth National Team Staff will select their Youth National Training Team in preparation for the 2012 Youth World Championships
